3PL or Your Own Warehouse Space? How to Decide

The short answer

Use a 3PL when you want someone else to store, pack, and ship your orders, and you're shipping enough to make that worth the fees. Get your own space when you want to keep packing in your own hands, your products need a personal touch, or your business is more than shipping boxes.

There's no wrong answer. Plenty of businesses start with one and switch to the other. The trick is knowing which problem you're actually trying to solve: "I don't have room" or "I don't have time."

What each option actually is

A 3PL (third-party logistics provider) stores your inventory in its warehouse and ships orders for you. You send stock in, orders flow to them through your store, and they pick, pack, and ship. You usually pay for storage, for each order handled, and for packing materials and shipping.

Your own warehouse space is a space you rent and run yourself. Your inventory lives there, and you or your team pack and ship. You pay rent, and you keep control of everything from the box to the thank-you note.

One is a service. The other is a place. That difference drives most of the decision.

Neither column is cheaper across the board. A 3PL can cost less at low volume with simple products. Your own space often costs less once order volume is steady, or when your products need care a 3PL doesn't provide.

Which one fits you right now

A 3PL is usually the better fit if you:

  • Ship a high volume of simple, standard orders
  • Would rather spend your time on marketing, product, or sales than packing
  • Sell products that don't need special handling or presentation
  • Need to ship from several regions to cut delivery times

Your own space is usually the better fit if you:

  • Care how every order looks when it's opened
  • Do custom work like bundles, personalization, or handwritten notes
  • Need to get your hands on inventory often, for listings, live sales, or shoots
  • Run more than a shipping operation, with a team, clients, or product development
  • Have watched 3PL fees climb as your orders grew
  • Had a 3PL make mistakes you had to apologize for

If you checked boxes on both lists, that's common. It usually means you need control and support at the same time.

The middle option: your own space, with help on the busywork

You don't have to choose between doing everything yourself and handing everything off. A flexible warehouse suite keeps your inventory and packing in your hands, while the building takes care of the jobs that eat your day.

At FlexEtc, that looks like:

  • Your own private suite for inventory and packing
  • Shipping and receiving handled on site, so pallets and packages land when you're out
  • Daily carrier pickups, so you're not driving boxes to a drop-off
  • Shared loading docks and equipment for getting stock in the door
  • Offices, conference rooms, and photo and podcast studios for the rest of your work
  • Month-to-month options, so you can try it without a long commitment

One Salt Lake City member runs a livestreamed auction business this way. He used to juggle fifteen storage units and receive pallets at home. Now he sells from one suite while our Community Managers handle receiving and outbound shipping.

You pack the orders. We'll take care of the etc.

FAQ

What is a 3PL? A third-party logistics provider stores your inventory and picks, packs, and ships your orders for you, usually for storage and per-order fees.

Is a 3PL cheaper than renting warehouse space? It depends on volume and what your orders need. 3PL costs rise with every order, while rent stays mostly fixed. Simple, low-volume shipping often favors a 3PL. Steady volume or custom packing often favors your own space.

When should I stop using a 3PL? Common signs include rising fees as orders grow, packing errors, slow access to your own inventory, and needing space for work a 3PL can't do, like shoots or product development.

Can I have my own warehouse space without doing all the logistics myself? Yes. At flexible workspaces like FlexEtc, you run your own suite while on-site staff handle shipping and receiving and daily carrier pickups come to you.

Does FlexEtc pack and ship orders for me? FlexEtc gives you your own space to pack, with shipping and receiving support on site. You stay in control of how your orders are packed.
